Portugal Secures Two Bronze Medals at the Biology Competition
Portuguese Students Shine in International Biology Olympiad
The Ibero-American Biology Olympiad, a competition for high school students in the field of Biology, is set to take place in Colombia from September 7 to 14. meanwhile, the Portuguese team for the event has already shown their potential in the recent International Biology Olympiad held in the Philippines.
The Portuguese team consisted of four students, including Daniel Nunes Marques from Alves Martins Secondary School in Viseu, Gabriela Pité Amaral e Silva from Moderno College in Lisbon, Kaixin Cheng from São Martinho do Porto Basic and Secondary School in Alcobaça, and André Ferreira from Lima-de-Faria Secondary School in Cantanhede.
The International Biology Olympiad, one of the most prestigious science competitions for high school students, took place from July 20 to 24, with the participation of 80 countries. Among the Portuguese students, Gabriela Amaral e Silva from Colégio Moderno in Lisbon and David Montenegro from Escola Secundária João Gonçalves Zarco in Matosinhos stood out, receiving bronze medals.
Joana Vilarinho, a student from António Damásio Secondary School in Lisbon, also received a merit certificate from the Order of Biologists for her dedicated participation. André Ferreira was also recognised for his committed performance in the competition.
The Portuguese team was coordinated by teachers Pedro Oliveira and Maria Margarida Roque. The Order of Biologists congratulated all the students and teachers involved in international competitions, emphasising the importance of recognising excellence in Biology teaching in Portugal.
Meanwhile, the Ibero-American Biology Olympiad, organised by the International Biology Olympiad Committee, is a precursor to the international event and aims to foster a love for Biology among high school students across the Ibero-American region. Matilde Domingos Luís from Moderno College, Lisbon is one of the students representing Portugal in the upcoming event.
As the Ibero-American Biology Olympiad approaches, the focus is on encouraging students to showcase their knowledge and passion for Biology, with the hope of continuing Portugal's success in the international arena.
