Potential alternatives for the 10 dropped majors at Marymount University?
Marymount University is making significant changes to its academic offerings, dropping traditional majors like Art, English, Economics, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Secondary Education, Sociology, Theology & Religious Studies, and English and Humanities, while introducing new and popular majors for the incoming Fall 2025 class.
Among the new majors are Nursing, Business Administration, and Biology, which have seen a surge in popularity. However, the university is not abandoning the arts and humanities altogether. Instead, it is offering a variety of options within these fields, such as Art with a K-12 teaching license, Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising and marketing, Graphic and Media Design, Interior design, Art History (minor), Ceramics (minor), Fashion Design (minor), Fashion Marketing (minor), Fashion Merchandising (minor), Game Design and Development (minor), Graphic and Media Design (minor), Illustration (minor), Marketing (minor), Media and Performance Study (minor), Studio Art (minor), UX/UI Web Design (minor), and Web Design (minor).
The university is also adding new options for English Language Learners, including ESL and intensive courses. For those interested in teaching, History and Social Sciences with a Secondary level teaching license is a new option in the History field.
In addition, the university is offering advanced combined degrees such as an MBA/MS in Business Administration and Information Technology for graduate students. Sociology offers a variety of options, including Liberal Studies, Leadership and systems thinking tracks, Sociology + Catholic University School of Law, Criminal Justice (minor), Forensic Psychology (minor) (open to psychology majors), Forensics and Criminal Investigation (minor), Gender and Society (minor), Public Relations (minor), Social Entrepreneurship (minor), Entrepreneurship (minor), and Sociology (minor).
Communication, Digital Writing and Narrative Design, English plus Catholic University School of Law, English with Secondary level teaching license, Communication (minor), English (minor), Journalism (minor), Writing (minor) are new options in the English field. Mathematics offers Mathematics and University of North Dakota Mechanical Engineering Dual Degree, Mathematics with a secondary teaching license, Applied Statistics (minor), Data Science (minor), and Mathematics (minor) as options.
The university does not provide a direct major in Philosophy, but offers Liberal Studies, Leadership and systems thinking tracks, Neuroscience, Philosophy (minor) as options in the Philosophy field. Similarly, the university does not provide a direct major in Economics, but offers a BA in economics plus Catholic University School of law as an option in the Economics field.
It is worth noting that these changes do not impact other Master's degrees or minors. Many choices are still available as electives. The university is committed to providing a diverse and comprehensive education to its students, and these changes reflect that commitment.
