Resident of Dubai advocates for improvements in cat safety following the loss of neighborhood felines
In a gated community in Dubai, resident Chiku Singh has dedicated over 25 years of her life to animal welfare. With a passion for supporting stray animals, she has been instrumental in implementing initiatives such as trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs and setting up feeding stations away from roads. Her efforts, along with those of other residents, have made a significant difference in the community, ensuring a safer environment for cats, children, families, and dogs.
Recently, Chiku recalled a heart-wrenching incident involving a two-week-old kitten named Twinkle, who was left for dead after a hit-and-run. Thanks to weeks of care, Twinkle survived. This tragic event underscores the ongoing issue of reckless driving inside gated communities, which poses a threat to the safety of animals.
Meanwhile, in the digital realm, Bearlot's Furry Friends (BFF) is making waves as a mobile app reimagining adoption, fostering, and pet parenting. BFF's COO, Raya Al Jaghoub, believes the app offers a technology-driven solution to improve animal welfare nationwide. The app includes a personalised AI assistant for pet advice and a digital 'Pawfile' to track vet visits and vaccinations.
Raneem Al Jaghoub, BFF's CEO, shares a similar vision, stating that every animal deserves more than just survival. She emphasises the importance of education and awareness in improving animal welfare standards in the region.
Unfortunately, the problem of pet abandonment continues to grow worse each year. In an effort to combat this issue, residents in Abu Dhabi are advised to contact the Centre of Waste Management on hotline 800555 if they encounter strays.
Pet welfare groups warn that many pets are abandoned on the streets during the summer months in the UAE. This unfortunate reality highlights the need for continued efforts to protect and care for our furry friends.
Chiku hopes that her actions serve as a model for other communities in Dubai, inspiring them to make small changes that can prevent tragedies. Her relentless dedication to animal welfare is a shining example of the impact one person can have in making a difference.
