Romanian students secure four gold awards at the 37th Global Informatics Olympics
Romania Shines at the International Olympiad in Informatics 2025
Romania made history at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2025, held in Sucre, Bolivia, by securing an unprecedented four gold medals. This is the first time that all team members from Romania have won gold at this prestigious competition.
The Romanian team, composed of Rareș-Andrei Neculau from 'Vasile Alecsandri' National College, Galați, Rareș-Felix Tudose and Mihai-Valeriu Voicu from the International Computer Science High School, Bucharest, and Mircea Maxim Rebengiuc from 'Tudor Vianu' National College of Informatics, Bucharest, delivered a perfect performance, securing the highest score possible.
This achievement surpasses Romania’s previous best performances at the IOI, solidifying their position as a leading nation in informatics education and competitive programming on the global stage. The team was coordinated by Bogdan Ioan Popa, a student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest, and Marius Nicoli, a teacher at the "Frații Buzești" National College in Craiova.
The IOI 2025 brought together participants from over 90 countries, with over 330 participants from 84 countries competing. Romania's success at the event was widely celebrated, with the University of Bucharest issuing a press release about the team's achievement.
In the previous year, Romania won one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal at the IOI held in Egypt. This year's historic victory places Romania second in the world by the number of medals, tied with Poland.
