School Supplies for the Year 2025: A Look at the 3B Essentials for Classrooms

In preparation for the 2025 school year, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has partnered with the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) to provide a list of essential and cost-effective school supplies tailored by educational level.

For preschool, families can expect to spend between 300 and 600 pesos on supplies. Primary school supplies are estimated to cost between 500 and 1,000 pesos, while secondary school supplies are expected to cost between 1,100 and 1,400 pesos. These amounts cover essential school supplies but do not include expenses for backpacks, uniforms, or shoes, which can increase total costs up to approximately 3,800 pesos or more depending on brand and quality.

Profeco advises parents to reuse school supplies when possible to reduce expenses, compare prices carefully before purchasing to find the best deals, and take advantage of tax-free days at major stores like Walmart to save additional money on supplies. Additionally, free textbooks are guaranteed and distributed by the government, helping reduce costs for families.

The agency conducted a quality study on 105 school supplies from 37 different brands. The most effective liquid adhesives were Mae, Adherol, and Resistol 850, while the Barrilito adhesive pencil received an excellent rating. The best-rated plastic rulers were Barrilito, Mae, Maped, Office Depot, Pelikan, and Petigón. The European School Classic and the KIP Professional hardcover notebooks received an "Excellent" rating for leaf and cover resistance.

The most economical hexagonal number 2 pencil is the Norma brand, while the Paper Mate Mirado is the most expensive. The National Laboratory for Consumer Protection evaluated these school supplies, verifying commercial information, resistance, adhesion, and performance.

The 2025 Back to School Fair, scheduled for August 16 at Expo Reforma, Mexico City, will offer up to 50% discounts on school supplies, clothing, footwear, and more. The fair will also provide free services such as haircuts and medical certificates. However, it will not offer a channel for staying informed about the most relevant news, opinion articles, entertainment, trends, and more.

Profeco monitored the prices of 689 school supplies between June 24 and July 21. Until August 31, the special operation "Back to School 2025" remains active, with patrols and guidance to consumers about their rights. The operation aims to ensure that consumers are not overcharged and that they receive the best quality school supplies within their budget.
