Senate endorses ex-Fox News presenter Pirro for lead federal prosecutor in Washington D.C.

Jeanine Pirro, a 1975 graduate of Albany Law School, has been confirmed as the top federal prosecutor for the District of Columbia by the Senate. With a background rooted in extensive prosecutorial and judicial experience in New York’s criminal justice system, Pirro brings a wealth of courtroom experience to her new role.

Pirro began her legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Westchester County, New York. She gained significant courtroom experience as an aggressive prosecutor, notably leading the first Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Bureau in Westchester County. In 1990, she was elected as a judge of the Westchester County Court, and in 1993, she made history as the first woman elected District Attorney of Westchester County, a role she held for three terms. During her tenure, she established the nation’s first domestic violence prosecution unit.

Before her appointment as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Pirro was widely known for her television career, including hosting "Justice with Judge Jeanine" and co-hosting Fox News's "The Five." However, she returned to government service when President Donald Trump appointed her as interim U.S. Attorney for D.C. in May 2025, subsequently confirmed by the Senate to officially fill the top federal prosecutor role.

The confirmation vote was 50 to 45, with Pirro's nomination receiving bipartisan support. Last month, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to send Pirro's nomination to the Senate floor.

It's important to note that this article does not cover the withdrawal of President Trump's first pick for the position, Ed Martin Jr., due to Martin's support for the Jan. 6 rioters, nor does it provide any new information about the lawsuits filed by Smartmatic USA and Dominion Voting Systems against Fox News, Pirro, and others. Additionally, the article does not discuss any maneuvers taken by the Trump administration regarding Essayli, L.A.'s top federal prosecutor, or any events related to the Jan. 6 riots or the pardons issued by President Trump related to the riots.

In a separate event, Emil Bove, Trump's defense lawyer, was confirmed to a U.S. appeals court. Unlike Jeanine Pirro, Bove does not have a background in prosecution or courtroom experience, as confirmed by a separate news article.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that Pirro's ex-husband, Albert Pirro, was pardoned by President Trump in the final minutes of his first term, after being convicted in 2000 of conspiracy and tax evasion crimes. Martin now serves as the Justice Department's pardon attorney. A similar lawsuit against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems resulted in a $787-million settlement. The confirmation of Alina Habba as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor is a separate event from both Jeanine Pirro's and Emil Bove's confirmations.
