Significant Alterations Planned for Schools in the Foothill Region - Dramatic shifts expected inlocal educational institutions starting from the 2026-2027 academic year

The ABC Unified School District has recently made a significant decision that will impact the sporting landscape for local schools. After four rounds of voting at the Whittier Union High School District office, Proposal C was chosen, receiving 34 votes.

This proposal calls for a consolidation of seven area schools, including Oxford Academy and Whitney, which do not currently field football programs, and Dominguez High, which will move into another league not part of the Foothill Area. El Rancho High will partner with schools currently in the Almont League and Mission Valley League.

Brice, a key figure in the re-leaguing process, explained that the new conference aims to provide more opportunities for struggling teams to qualify for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs and increase chances of teams winning league titles. The goal is to create a more equitable match-up for lower performing schools, such as the girls water polo team at Oxford Academy, which currently does not have a league.

The league consisting of twenty schools involves the current 605 League, Del Rio League, Gateway League, and Mid-Cities League. However, due to the increased number of schools, it is speculated that the league may be divided into three leagues. The names of the new conference and leagues will be revealed during the 2025-2026 school year.

Tennis is another sport that will be affected by the changes. Brice stated that not all sports will be the same in the new conference, with decisions yet to be made. The new conference is expected to provide a middle ground for schools like Whitney, allowing them to play more competitive schools without having to travel long distances.

In related news, the ABC Unified School District board has accepted a consolidation report to close five schools and implement a comprehensive restructuring of grade levels and attendance boundaries. This is the third time since the 2018-2019 school year that the seven area schools have been part of such a change.
