The idea for "Poor Ghost!" originated from disparate impulses coalescing. During a fellowship at Harvard the year of the Covid pandemic, Flynn experienced a sense of class mobility. Returning to his childhood home in Manchester that year, he saw United States' elite academia and his working-class roots reflected distinctly. This contrast inspired the concept of writing a novel that could encompass both worlds, allowing them to illuminate and challenge each other.
Throughout the writing process, Flynn found himself wrestling with his personal struggles and the desire to leave them behind. Having spent two years in psychoanalysis, Flynn felt that writing a novel was a means of not only expressing these experiences but also achieving a sense of completeness and moving on. The novel's characters grapple with similar ambititions and failures, as well as questions of identity and purpose.
While certain elements of Luca mirror Flynn's own experiences, "Poor Ghost!" is ultimately a work of fiction, not autofiction.
