Newsmaker Alert!

A shocking video has surfaced online, revealing a disturbing incident at School No. 49 in the quaint Karaoi village of the Almaty region. The footage shows an older student engaging in a brutal assault against younger students, striking them mercilessly inside the school toilet while hurling vile curses. Remarkably, the victims seemed unable or unwilling to defend themselves.

Found on the Instagram account Astana-sergek, the disturbing footage has sparked widespread outrage. The authorities in Almaty region confirmed the incident occurred in September 2024, but no complaints had been registered with the police at the time.

A criminal case has since been initiated for suspected battery of a minor, with the investigation still ongoing. The legal guardians of the involved minors, both the aggressor and the recorder of the video, have been held administratively responsible for their duties in child rearing.

Meanwhile, the minors have been placed under preventive supervision, and a proposal for additional protective measures has been presented to the commission on minors under the akimat.

Recall the chilling incident in Almaty earlier this year, where another schoolgirl was brutally assaulted? Similar instances of student violence and mass brawls have been reported in Almaty, while a teenager was tragically stabbed to death during a group fight in Karaganda.

Sadly, incidents of violence and social unrest have become a concerning trend in Kazakhstan. In 2020, ethnic tensions flared up in the Zhambyl region following a road-rage brawl that led to fatalities, demonstrating the potential for unrest in various parts of the country. When such incidents arise, authorities usually respond by deploying forces and restricting communications to control the situation.

Navigating human rights issues remains a challenge for Kazakhstan, with concerns about freedom of assembly and gender-based violence frequently raised. As such, investigations into violence must abide by international standards and address the broader societal challenges that persist.
