Successful Streak for Mock Trial Team with Series of Notable Wins
Holy Cross Mock Trial C-Team Shines in Championship and Tournaments
The College of the Holy Cross's Mock Trial C-Team, composed of first- and second-year volunteers, made a strong impression in the Mock Trial championship on November 4, 2021, and a subsequent tournament on February 23rd and 24th. The team, which faced off against the University of Massachusetts (UMass), Siena College, Buffalo State University, and the University of New Hampshire, secured three victories in the competitions.
Prior to the championship, only one out of ten members of the C-team had participated in Mock Trial at a college level. Despite this, the team quickly bonded over the course of the weekend and is described as being 'very tight-knit.'
The trials were based on a case of a billionaire robbing an art auction, with accusations including Conspiracy, Grand Theft, and Possession of Stolen Property. The teams' performances were judged by real attorneys, paralegals, and sitting judges.
The Class of 2027, which recently arrived on campus, was well-represented on the C-team, with Henry Meiser '27 and Molly Coghan '27 winning the Outstanding Attorney Award. Maggie Baughman '27, who serves as News Editor, News Staff Writer, and Chief News Editor for news articles at the College of the Holy Cross, expressed her enjoyment of the competition, stating that it was fun competing against other schools and learning from teammates.
In addition to the championship, the C-team also participated in a tournament for the Holy Cross Mock Trial club. The tournament was attended by students competing in collegiate mock trial for the first time. The team is now preparing for a scrimmage against Lasell University and UMass Lowell this upcoming weekend.
Moreover, the College of the Holy Cross has been covering tuition for students coming from families with annual incomes of less than $100,000 since the 2022-2023 academic year. Furthermore, 65% of the student body benefited from the $76.5 million the school set aside for this purpose in the past academic year.
The C-team's success in the Mock Trial competitions is a testament to their hard work and dedication, and they look forward to continuing to represent the College of the Holy Cross in future competitions.
