Sudan Conflict Escalates: 4,250 Displaced, 99 Injured in Recent Attacks

Heavy rains and flooding have displaced around 4,250 people in Um Algura, Al Jazirah state. Meanwhile, the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate, with recent reports of mass bombardments, a state of near-total siege in El Fasher, and ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Yale report paints a grim picture in El Fasher, where civilians face constant threat from mass bombardments. The international community has been urged to intervene, with a joint statement in September 2025 calling for a three-month humanitarian ceasefire to facilitate aid and initiate a civil society-led transition process. However, specific details about the countries involved remain unclear.

The conflict has led to a surge in casualties, with 99 people, including women and children, treated for injuries following recent attacks by RSF and SAF. The use of advanced anti-jamming 'Safrouq' drones by SAF in recent battles has further escalated the situation. The UN Security Council (UN SC) has extended sanctions on Sudan for another year, maintaining an arms embargo and targeted sanctions.

Clashes have intensified in North Kordofan state, and there are reports of heavy fighting along the Omdurman-Bara road and near El Obeid. Satellite imagery has confirmed over 50 shelling incidents in Abu Shouk camp for internally displaced persons between 30 August and 10 September. The ongoing resistance from RSF has posed a significant challenge to SAF, despite the recapture of Bara.

Disagreements among UN SC members persist regarding stronger measures against human rights abuses and arms flows in the region.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains dire, with thousands displaced due to flooding and conflict. The international community must work together to enforce the proposed ceasefire and ensure the protection of civilians. The UN SC's extended sanctions aim to curb the escalating violence and human rights abuses.
