Oberlin Science Research Institute (OSRI): Fostering Independent Researchers at Oberlin College

The Oberlin Science Research Institute (OSRI) is a program at Oberlin College that offers students the opportunity to delve deeply into scientific research through hands-on experiences. Established in 2006 by Professor Yolanda Cruz, the OSRI is an important step in many Obies' research careers, preparing them for internships, graduate school, industry, and off-campus research experiences.

The Institute serves as a hub for research among Oberlin students and faculty mentors, spanning various disciplines including sciences, humanities, social sciences, and arts. Each year, students submit research proposals to the OSRI Fellowship, with successful applications investigating a wide range of topics.

Recent projects have included investigations into ableism amongst autistic adults, gene expression during vertebrate development, and the application of machine learning to predict opioid hotspots. This diversity of research topics showcases OSRI's commitment to interdisciplinary research and encourages collaboration between students and faculty mentors in the development of research proposals.

In addition to fostering student-led inquiry, the OSRI also nurtures a sense of community among Oberlin students and faculty. The Institute hosts workshops and community events, providing opportunities for students to share their research findings and learn from their peers.

The OSRI Fellowship application process involves developing in-depth research proposals and mentorship plans with faculty mentors. This process prepares students for the rigors of independent research, setting them up for success in their future academic and professional pursuits.

The Oberlin Science Research Institute plays a significant role in many Oberlin students' research journeys, offering opportunities for students to conduct research in diverse fields and work towards honors projects and fellowship applications. As an incubator for new ideas, the OSRI is a vital part of Oberlin College's broad tradition of academic rigor and progressive education.

At Oberlin Science Research Institute (OSRI), students dive into scientific research through hands-on experiences, facilitating their education and self-development. This Institute encourages learning by hosting workshops and community events where students share research findings and learn from their peers.
