Valentine's Day 💘 and Mother's Day 💮 are the hot dates on the calendar for blooming business. While the former flowers on February 14, the latter blooms every second Sunday of May (May 11 this year), and both bring unexpected customers to the store.
Ever pondered why those beautiful bouquets can burn a hole in your pocket? Remember, florists and their team aren't rolling in petals just yet! Floristry may require three years of vocational training, but it's certainly not a route to riches. Despite being classified as a 'skilled occupation,' the profession doesn't offer the six-figure salaries many might expect.
Mother's Day Magic: Modest Earnings Spread Far and Wide
According to the Federal Employment Agency's wage atlas, the average florist takes home a monthly gross income of 2,220 EUR. One in four earns less than 1,902 EUR, while a quarter earns more than 2,495 EUR. These figures are based on about 10,700 salary data points for this profession, making floristry one of the lowest-paid vocational jobs.
Last year, the IG Bau and the Association of German Florists (FDF) agreed on a two-stage wage hike. Starting July 1, 2024, wages will rise by 2.5 to 6 percent, with an additional 2.5 to 4.75 percent increase scheduled for July 1, 2025. This will push the hourly wage to 15.48 EUR. The collective agreement lasts until June 30, 2026.
However, these minimum wages, negotiated by the IG Bau, only apply to the western collective agreement area. Employers in the eastern states refuse to adopt the results, with the current general statutory minimum wage of 12.82 EUR per hour (1,556 EUR per month for a 37-hour week) serving as the binding minimum wage for these regions. The industry employs around 30,000 people in total[1].
