TSU, established under the Union Ministry of Cooperation, is designed as a pioneering institution to professionalise the cooperative sector through education, training, research, and innovation. With a strong emphasis on rural economic development and governance improvements in cooperative organisations, TSU aims to prepare professional and trained manpower to meet the growing needs of the sector.
The university's academic structure will be multidisciplinary, aimed at equipping grassroots-level organisations with both technical and managerial skills. TSU will offer structured academic and training programs, flexible programs such as PhDs, degrees, diplomas, and certificates, tailored to different operational levels within the sector.
The focus of TSU is on specialized education, training, and research in cooperative management, finance, law, and rural development. The university is dedicated to empowering grassroots cooperative institutions by promoting innovation, capacity building, improving governance, and accelerating inclusive and sustainable rural economic development.
Key features of TSU include:
- Offering a range of flexible and multidisciplinary programs such as PhDs, managerial degrees, diplomas at supervisory levels, and certificates at operational levels. - Establishing subject-specific schools on the main campus and in other states to create a national network of cooperative education and training, aiming to standardise quality across more than 200 existing cooperative institutions in four years. - Setting up a dedicated Research and Development Council within the university to promote innovation and affordable technologies in cooperatives, especially for rural areas, addressing an existing lack of institutional support for R&D in this sector. - Transitioning the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) into part of TSU, reflecting the legacy of figures like Dr. Verghese Kurien and Tribhuvandasji Patel, who championed cooperative welfare for farmers and rural upliftment.
The R&D wing of TSU will collaborate with reputed national and international institutions to introduce global best practices in India. Moreover, an NCERT-developed educational module to help schoolchildren understand the values and impact of the cooperative movement will also be unveiled during the event.
The event is expected to be attended by several dignitaries, including Union Ministers of State for Cooperation Krishan Pal Gurjar and Muralidhar Mohol, Gujarat Education Minister Rishikesh Patel, Cooperation Minister Jagdish Vishwakarma, Ministry Secretary Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani, and TSU Vice Chancellor Dr. J.M. Vyas. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary are also expected to attend the event.
In addition, Amit Shah will participate in a tree plantation under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign during the event.
