Trump Justified His Decision to Cut Funding for The Trevor Project

In a move that has sparked controversy, the Trump administration has officially ended its partnership with The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organisation that provides crucial suicide-prevention support to LGBT-identifying youth.

The Trevor Project, known for its crisis intervention and suicide-prevention services, handled approximately 231,000 crisis contacts in 2024. The organisation's website urges children to "unlearn" the idea that humans are inherently male or female, and instead adopt the view that "gender and sex exist on a spectrum." The website also suggests that children who do not fit rigid gender stereotypes may actually be transgender, with an internal "gender identity" misaligned with their bodies.

Critics, however, argue that the organisation's approach to gender and sexuality is harmful and endangers vulnerable children. The Trump administration, in its statement, expressed opposition to what it considered to be political agendas promoted under the guise of suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth.

Brad Polumbo, an independent journalist and host of the Brad vs Everyone podcast, is among those who criticise The Trevor Project. He asserts that the organisation peddles harmful pseudoscience to vulnerable youth. On the other hand, Colin Wright, an evolutionary biologist and fellow at the Manhattan Institute, has defended the organisation, stating that opposing the Trevor Project is not comparable to opposing help for suicidal kids.

The decision to end the partnership will terminate the "Press 3" option that routes children's calls to Trevor Project counselors. This move has been met with strong opposition from the organisation, with The Trevor Project's CEO, Amit Paley, describing it as "devastating."

New York governor Kathy Hochul has accused the Trump administration of "targeting suicidal kids," while Rep. Dan Goldman claims that the GOP is "willing to sacrifice children for their insidious culture war." The Trump administration, however, maintains that the move is aimed at protecting vulnerable youth and ensuring they receive compassionate, evidence-based care.

The Trevor Project is currently crowdfunding to replace the millions in expected federal cuts. The organisation's argument that defunding the organisation is equivalent to wishing death upon gay teens has been refuted by many, including Wright, who asserts that criticising an organisation's approach does not equate to wishing harm upon the individuals it serves.

As the debate continues, it is clear that the end of this partnership has significant implications for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly for vulnerable youth in need of support. The Trevor Project's mission to provide a lifeline for these young people remains a crucial issue in the ongoing discourse surrounding gender, sexuality, and the role of government in supporting marginalised communities.
