University expresses grief over the demise of its former student

Anthony Wallace, a distinguished alumnus of our university and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), served as an officer with the Hoonah Police Department in Alaska since 2008. Tragically, on August 29, 2010, Anthony lost his life while on duty, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Tony was an accomplished athlete during his student days, earning the title of All-American wrestler. He continued to excel, graduating as the valedictorian from the police academy and being inducted into our university's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

In an interview with University News last year, Tony expressed his hope that his accomplishments could inspire others. His spirit of determination and bravery will undoubtedly continue to do so.

The university community has extended their condolences to Tony's family, friends, and colleagues, and they hope to find a time to appreciate all members of law enforcement who put their lives at risk for the community, in memory of Tony.

A memorial service for Tony is planned to be held on campus, with details to be shared as they become available. As of now, it may not be publicly announced, or details might be shared internally through the university’s official channels. Checking the relevant university's official website, athletics page, or contacting their communications office directly could provide the needed information.

The incident that claimed Anthony's life was an attack by a lone gunman, resulting in the deaths of Anthony and a colleague. This serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with police work.

Before joining the Hoonah Police Department, Anthony worked on our university's Public Safety staff. His service to our community did not end with his graduation, and he will always be remembered as a hero.

In the spirit of Tony's legacy, let us continue to support and appreciate our law enforcement officers, who risk their lives daily to keep our communities safe.

  1. The memorial service for Anthony Wallace, the distinguished alumnus and former officer, will be held on campus, inspiring students to attend an event that pays tribute to a brave individual who exemplified education-and-self-development, general-news, and crime-and-justice.
  2. While Tony's accomplishments in Art during student days may not have made headlines in the general-news, his presence in the education-and-self-development sector, such as being valedictorian and inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, have left a lasting impact on the university community.
  3. As the tragic event that claimed Anthony's life showcases the challenges of crime-and-justice work, it is essential to recognize the incredible efforts made by law enforcement officers, both on and off campus, and support ongoing education and development in this critical area of our society.
