In a significant move to bolster the country's economy and promote equitable access to higher education, Thailand's new higher education minister has announced the introduction of scholarships tailored to address national priorities and strategic sectors.

## Addressing National Priorities

The scholarships, designed to align with Thailand's strategic sectors, will focus on areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, food innovation, tourism, sports, and cutting-edge technologies [2][5]. This sector focus aims to develop a workforce capable of driving economic growth in these areas.

By emphasizing sectors that are crucial for Thailand's economic development, the scholarships support research and innovation activities. These efforts are part of broader strategies like the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy and Strategy (2027), which seeks to enhance research capabilities and competitiveness [3].

The scholarships ensure that higher education programs are aligned with Thailand 4.0 initiatives, which aim to transform the country into a high-value, technologically advanced economy [1][4].

## Promoting Equity in Higher Education

The scholarships include substantial fee subsidies that will benefit approximately 730,000 students and their families, aiming to reduce financial barriers and make higher education more accessible [2].

The scholarships offer targeted support to specific groups, including students with disabilities, youth from remote areas, and academically gifted individuals from low-income backgrounds. This focus on disadvantaged groups helps promote equity by increasing access to education for those who might otherwise be excluded [2].

The provision of nearly 8,000 scholarships ensures that talent from various backgrounds is nurtured and encouraged to pursue higher education. Additionally, 2,800 scholarships specifically target outstanding students in critical fields, further fostering talent development aligned with national strategic goals [2].

In her agenda, the new minister, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, has emphasized the importance of human capital development, underscoring the role these scholarships play in shaping Thailand's future workforce and economy.

The scholarships also form part of the "One University, One Mission for the Local Area" initiative, which aims to mobilize universities and research institutions to tackle regional economic and social challenges [6]. Furthermore, the initiative will also focus on smart farming technologies to address agricultural productivity, environmental quality, and waste management [7].

Innovation will be used to address environmental and disaster-related challenges such as air pollution, floods, and droughts [8]. The minister manages a 19.8-billion-baht fund for advancing science, research, and innovation [9].

These new scholarships mark a significant step towards addressing Thailand's most pressing issues, with efforts directed towards creating tangible economic and social impacts [10].

  1. To further drive economic growth and address national priorities, scholarships in Thailand will focus on merging education with key sectors such as finance, technology, education-and-self-development, and sports, as these scholarships aim to develop a workforce capable of excelling in these critical areas.
  2. In line with the minister's focus on human capital development, these scholarships will also support students from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities and students from low-income families, in pursuing higher education and career paths in these strategic sectors, such as finance and technology, thus fostering equity in education and preparing talent for shaping the nation's economy.
