University Leader Designated as Representative for Uni Vechta - University leader designated with new position: Commissioner

Following the dismissal of the University of Vechta's president, a representative from the Ministry of Science will take over the university's leadership. Lower Saxony's Minister of Science, Falko Mohrs (SPD), has appointed Thomas Bals, a retired professor of economics from Osnabrück, as the interim leader. The appointment takes effect on June 1 and will initially last for a year.

The decision was reached in consultation with the university's governing bodies. Martina Blasberg-Kuhnke, a retired theology professor from Osnabrück, will support Bals in his new role.

Bals' experience in university management and strategic development, coupled with his tenure as vice-president for university development and strategy in Osnabrück, make him a suitable candidate for the job. Meanwhile, Blasberg-Kuhnke served as vice-president for studies and teaching in Osnabrück.

The senate removed President Verena Pietzner in January due to disagreements over cost-cutting measures prompted by declining student numbers.

"For this, it needs an unhindered operational presidency to implement necessary measures for strategic development and financial consolidation," explained Mohrs. The interim appointment is crucial to addressing these issues during the transition.

Since the president's dismissal, the vice-president for research, academic advancement, and transfer has also resigned.
