Unveiled Intentions: Revealed on April 6, 2018
It's been an eventful week at Park University. Here's a roundup of some of the notable happenings:
Academic Recognitions and Achievements
- Patty Ryberg provided comments for a story that appeared on the National Geographic website on March 16 related to five new fossil forests being found in Antarctica.
- Lacey Finley, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of management, was honored by the National Business Education Association. She recently won the Association for Research in Business Education's Doctoral Dissertation Award.
- Igor Khukhua, a violinist and graduate student in the International Center for Music, won first place in the strings division of the Naftzger Young Artists Competition.
Athletic Milestones
- Colleen (Mahoney) Scherman, '09, Park's first-ever NAIA All-American in women's volleyball, has been selected for the Park Athletics Wall of Honor. She will be the first women's volleyball individual to be inducted into the Athletics Wall of Honor.
Community Engagement
- Sonia Warshawski, a Holocaust survivor living in the Kansas City area, will have her story screened at Park University on April 9. The event, titled "Big Sonia," will include a live music performance, a film screening, and a panel discussion. All donations from the event will go to Harvesters.
- Lora Zaidarhzauva represented Park University and Study Missouri at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Advocacy Day, March 19-20, in Washington, D.C.
Innovation Grants and Awards
- Applications are open for the 2018-19 Sour website Tank Innovation Grants at Park University's Faculty Center for Innovation. Teams of three (faculty/staff/student combinations) can compete for grant awards up to $5,000 to fund innovative teaching or learning ideas.
- Two development projects in the Kansas City area that involved Park University were awarded Capstone Awards by the Kansas City Business Journal. Commerce Tower won in the mixed use category, while the Lenexa (Kan.) Civic Campus won in the community impact category.
Upcoming Events
- The Park Student Government Association is hosting its third annual 5K Run/Walk for Charity on April 21. The event will wind through the Parkville Campus and the Parkville Commercial Underground.
- Upcoming events at Park University include the New Works Faculty Art Exhibit, various music concerts, the "Big Sonia" Movie Screening and Panel Discussion, and several commencement ceremonies at various locations. The event is part of Park University's 2017-18 Year of Diversity series of events.
- Roberta Park presented a discussion on "Talking Tolkien" in Kansas City, Mo., on March 25.
- Alla Adams, Harold Griffin, and James Vanderleeuw co-presented a poster at the Small Cities Connect Conference and Expo on March 28 in Kansas City, Mo., titled "How City Websites are Used."
Remembrance
- Robert "Bob" Corbett, an honorary trustee of Park University, passed away on March 31 at the age of 100. He was a charter member of Park's Howard Bailey McAfee Heritage Society and served as Alumni Association president from 1952-53.
Public Affairs
- Patrick Moon was interviewed for stories that aired on KMBZ-FM in Kansas City on April 3, related to NATO-Russia relations and its impact on the U.S.
- Amy Wolf was interviewed by KCTV in Kansas City for stories that aired on April 2 related to active shooter response training for child care centers/providers.
Rankings
- The University was ranked No. 12 on BestValueSchools.org's "Schools Offering the Best Online Teaching Degrees of 2018" list.
- The University was ranked No. 12 on OnlineU.org's "2018 Most Affordable Online Colleges for Public Administration Degrees" list.
- The University was ranked No. 24 on OnlineU.org's "2018 Most Affordable Online Colleges for Communications Master's Degrees" list.
Restoration Efforts
- A story about the restoration efforts of Banneker School in Parkville, Mo., was featured on WDAF-TV in Kansas City on March 15.
Artistic Performances
- The Park University International Center for Music's Ben Sayevich and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich will perform a short piece before the film screening of "Big Sonia."
Admission to the "Big Sonia" event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested. The story of "Big Sonia" is a documentary portrait of Sonia Warshawski, a Holocaust survivor and quilt artist. It was directed by her granddaughter Leah Warshawski along with co-director Todd Soliday and offers a personal look at Sonia’s life and experiences. This film presents an intimate and fond portrayal, focusing on Sonia's resilience and dedication to sharing her story through art. The event will take place at 6 p.m. in the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater inside Alumni Hall on the Parkville Campus.
- With the upcoming screening of Sonia Warshawski's story at Park University on April 9, the event promotes not only a general news story but also education-and-self-development opportunities, as the movie offers insights into Holocaust survivor experiences.
