Viet Nam restates dedication to nuclear power for sustainable growth and development

Vietnam's active participation in the 69th regular session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, held at the Vienna International Centre from September 15 to 19, 2024, underscored the country's increasingly proactive and constructive role in promoting a safer and more sustainable world.

The session, which gathered over 2,000 senior officials and delegates from 179 IAEA member states, saw the Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Lê Xuân Định. During the conference, the delegation met with IAEA Deputy Director Generals Karine Herviou and Mikhail Chudakov.

Ambassador Vũ Lê Thái Hoàng, the Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations and international organisations in Vienna, commended the IAEA's achievements in advancing the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He also reiterated Vietnam's commitment to cooperating closely with the IAEA.

Vietnam has pledged to actively engage in international initiatives such as ZODIAC, NUTEC Plastics, Atoms4Food, and Rays of Hope. Notably, representatives from the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) made significant contributions, including presenting marine microplastic monitoring results under the NUTEC Plastics initiative.

The conference also marked a significant step in international cooperation to bolster nuclear security capacity and foster regional collaboration. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the VINATOM and the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) on September 16. This agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation in nuclear security and safety.

In November 2024, Vietnam's National Assembly approved the continued implementation of the Ninh Thuận nuclear power project. This landmark decision aims to reinforce energy infrastructure, ensure long-term energy security, promote scientific and technological capabilities, and develop a high-quality workforce.

The international community highly evaluated the contributions made by VINATOM. The participation of the Vietnamese delegation in the IAEA General Conference further solidified Vietnam's role as a responsible and active member in the global nuclear community.

The Ninh Thuận nuclear power project, along with Vietnam's active engagement in international initiatives and cooperation, is a testament to the country's commitment to a sustainable and secure future.
