Wharton School Announces New Quantitative Finance Degree Program

The Wharton School, one of the world's leading business schools, has launched a groundbreaking new degree program: the Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs Master of Science in Quantitative Finance (MSQF). Funded by a generous $60 million gift from philanthropist and Wharton alumnus Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs, the MSQF program is set to begin in fall 2026.

Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs, author of several books and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, is a renowned figure in the field of equity management. He is the principal and co-founder of Jacobs Levy Equity Management, where he serves as co-chief investment officer, portfolio manager, and co-director of research. Jacobs' contributions to the study of quantitative finance at the Wharton School extend beyond his professional endeavors, with a total philanthropic giving of over $80 million.

The MSQF program is designed for Penn students with a quantitative background and career aspirations in quantitative asset management and allied fields. It will offer more than 30 electives spanning various fields such as accounting, business economics, computer science, engineering, operations, statistics, and more.

The program will focus on developing critical skills in quantitative methods, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and financial markets. Students will benefit from the combination of Wharton's quantitative finance expertise and the access to multiple disciplines and vibrant communities present at Penn.

David Musto, the Ronald O. Perelman Professor in Finance, is the faculty director of the MSQF program. Musto leads the new quantitative finance program, which will focus on quantitative methods, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and financial markets. The program will also offer new focused courses, internships, and real-world experience.

Financial markets are evolving at breakneck speed, fueled by artificial intelligence, algorithmic trading, and data complexity. The MSQF program will provide students with the tools they need to navigate this dynamic landscape.

One of the unique features of the MSQF program is its hands-on research project addressing a real-world challenge currently faced by quantitative asset management firms. This project will provide students with practical, industry-relevant experience.

The MSQF program also benefits from the MSQF program provides exposure to industry leaders through a dedicated advisory board and Wharton's extensive global alumni network.

The MSQF program will have a lasting impact on the industry and many future generations of students. It marks the first new degree offering at the Wharton School in 50 years and ensures the Wharton School will be at the forefront of the dynamic field of quantitative finance.
