Nepal Appoints First Female Interim Prime Minister Amidst Political Unrest

Nepal has a new interim prime minister, Sushila Karki, who was sworn in on Friday. The appointment comes after intense negotiations between the army, the president, and representatives of the youth-led "GenZ" protests that toppled the previous administration.

The anti-government demonstrations, which began due to a social media ban by the Oli government, left at least 51 people dead and the parliament in flames. The unrest raged on over broader issues concerning Nepal's prolonged economic woes, despite the withdrawal of the social media ban.

Karki is known for her stand against graft in the government during her term as chief justice. Her appointment as interim prime minister marks a significant milestone for Nepal as she becomes the first woman to head the country.

The interim prime minister's first act in office was to recommend elections for March 2023, a recommendation that was accepted by President Ram Chandra Poudel. The election date has been set for March 5, 2023.

Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, has returned to daily life on Saturday, after the army took control during the anti-government demonstrations. The interim government is expected to oversee the election process and restore stability to the country.

Thousands of young protesters used social media and chat platform Discord to install Karki as their next leader, a testament to the power of digital activism in shaping Nepal's political landscape. The "GenZ" protests were a significant factor in the appointment of Karki as interim prime minister.

As Nepal prepares for elections, the focus will be on addressing the country's economic woes and rebuilding trust in the government. Karki's commitment to fighting corruption during her term as chief justice offers hope for a more accountable and transparent government.
